In 1947 Kenneth Wood and Roger Laurence formed WoodLau Industries and produce a turnover toaster. In 1948 Laurence left the company and the trading name changed to Kenwood Manufacturing Company Ltd. In 1950 at the Ideal Home Exhibition the Kenwood Chef was launched, the A700 model the first of the Kenwood chefs. By 1956 Kenwood have become an International company with turnover in excess of £1.5 million and employing over 400 people. By 1962 the Kenwood chef has become an icon of design and goes into production at the new Havant site, the most advanced manufacturing plant of its time in the UK. By the start of the 1970’s Kenwood are taking their products to the public on road shows in their own Kenwood Buses, vans and even a Kenwood Jet. At the start of 1976 the Kenwood Chef enters the digital age with cutting edge electronic speed control integrated into the design of the A901 Kenwood Chef, bring variable speed control and therefore a far smoother mixing action. By 1979 Kenwood introduce their fist food processor with the launch of the Processor de-luxe model A530 adding to their growing range of kitchen appliances. Moving into the 80’s and in 1988 Kenwood introduces the System K bringing cordless technology into the kitchen appliance market. In 1997 Kenneth Wood passes away at the age of 81 leaving behind a legacy and a name that throughout the world is synonymous with quality and modern and cutting edge design in kitchens and homes the world over. In 2007 Kenwood celebrated their 60th anniversary, the Kenwood name has revolutionised home cooking and has pioneered the automation of kitchens since the launch of its first product in 1947. Today Kenwood has a presence in 40 countries worldwide and has a catalogue of over 200 models, continuing to break barriers and innovate kitchen appliance manufacture.
One of the great innovations in the Kenwood Chef was the introduction of the planetary action, with the attachment socket mounted off centre on a plate that rotates in the opposite direction the Kenwood Chef attachments reach every part of the bowl with no intervention from the operative. The latest innovation in the Kenwood Chef family is the Kenwood cooking chef this introduces induction cooking with variable temperatures from 20c to 140c, this function can be used for gentle warming to full cooking, proving dough to tempering chocolate.
